“Rebel Red”
ALEXANDER PAIGE – 2020 La Jolla Studio “Rebel Red”
This abstract expressive painting was originally produced as a portrait transfer with an image & poster of James Dean. The image of James Dean was chosen as the young actor died young, just like the artist’s best friend who tragically passed in an automobile accident in July 16th 2021. Rebel Red is the true definition of overpainting & is one of the first paintings to contain fragments of broken mirrors by Alexander Paige. The vibrant layers of house paint & loose almost careless approach to the painting is a testament to and dedication to expression through the application of red oil paint onto canvas. The artist has very little recollection of producing “Rebel Red” as this painting was one of twelve paintings going at any given time during a summer where the artist was going through a myriad of emotions. “Rebel Red” as well as the paintings in the 2020 La Jolla collection are testament to painting being a strategy for recovery & working toward something in life, when it seems everything in your life is broken or decided to leave you. Alexander Paige isolated himself in the summer of 2020 in the infamous La Jolla Studio dealing with his own inner turmoil. “Rebel Red” is a highly expressive painting which was an an outlet for the artist search for his place in the world.
